The Institute of Christian-Muslim Understanding in Oregon organized a public joint concert with the aim of bringing Muslims and Christians together. The folk concert featured fourth-grade students from Oregon Episcopal School and Oregon Islamic Academy. The setlist included a variety of folk songs by artists like Bob Dylan and The Wailin’ Jennys.
“The arts transcend our doctrines. Music elevates us, and we can meet there,” said Jan Elfers, public policy director for Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. Elfers also added that it is important to bring the parents together, and to debunk the common misconceptions that religions are at odds, “we want to provide a counter to all the bad news about how our religions don’t get along.”
